Proverbs 28:7

“The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding, but a companion of gluttons shames his father.”

The wisdom of a man who learns his father’s ways is in keeping the Law of God, and while this proverb could be taken to mean any ordinances of man proper, the intention here is an understanding of the Torah.

The Law of God commands all men to teach their children the highest ways, and shirking this responsibility only leads to disastrous results. This is an admonition for the father as much as it is for the son.

Instruct your son or daughter in God’s ways and Jesus will bless you with a child who listens to instructions likened to sweet honey.

Not teaching children the right way leads to them wishing for bad company and joining in unhealthy habits. God’s instructions teach wisdom, and a wise man will not overindulge like those who drink far too much or gorge themselves with meat. Careful humility in not overusing resources brings esteem. The man who keeps the law will find like-minded friends, who bring honor to their families.

The father as well as the son are a symbiotic duo and through instruction both benefit from their endeavors to keep the law.
